Ruler of Chile, 1973 to 1990

Regime responsible for torture and disappearances

Seized power in a coup against Salvador Allende, imposed free-market reforms designed by the “Chicago Boys” and oversaw torture and disappearances. He left office after losing a 1988 plebiscite.
